We hear all the time about dogs considered “unclean” by Muslims. How does this impact on the Saluki in Islam society and homes?
    Thanks Ron Grant

  • Shelley says:

You are correct in stating that Muslim culture considers ordinary dogs or ‘kelb’ unclean, but the Saluki is said to have been afforded a unique position; the breed is apparently declared ‘sacred’ by Muslim religion and proclaimed in the Koran as the ‘gift of Allah’ and as a result of this high regard, they are kept separate from kelb and allowed to share their master’s home. Of course, this is purely academic, since I am not Muslim nor from an Eastern culture so can only recite that which I have been taught. I am acquainted with a number of Eastern salukiphiles and they live with their hounds as far as I can tell so your guess is probably as good as mine!
