what's new
05/09/10 THEY'RE HERE!
The Faridaat F Litter made it's debut on Mother's Day! Now how's that for a great gift for mum? Layla gave us six lovely pups in shades of fawn, cream and black/tan. Three girls, three boys! Stay tuned for photos and updates as our little F's grow! :more >>
04/29/10 IT'S ALL ABOUT CHOCOLATE!
Our darling Truffle has arrived! After an 11hr drive and an overnight hotel stay, I managed to find my way to the airport without getting lost. Her flight was delayed slightly resulting in extra wait time for both of us, but everything else went without a hitch! She's now a Canadian citizen and we'll have to teach her English! The Government got their share (double what I was expecting), the airline got theirs, and Agriculture Canada got some too. Needless to say, my pockets are now empty, but my heart is happy :D After brief introductions into the pack, she pounced on a skinny toy, claimed her spot on the couch and all was well with the world! A big thank you to Dagmar Bischoff (Pari-was Salukis) for allowing this decadent treat to come to us and for all her help with organizing flights, etc. We are thrilled with our new baby girl! :learn more about Truffle >>
04/23/10 ONCE AGAIN, HAVE TRUFFLE WILL TRAVEL!
Who would have thought our little Truffle's trek across the pond would be pre-empted by a volcanic eruption? If you haven't seen images of this volcanic event, please take a look at these stunning photos of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano.
At any rate, we've had to rebook her flight plans and now expect her to arrive on April 27th, barring any more natural disasters that is! :learn more >>
04/18/10 SPDBS CRN'S ASSIGNED
I think I've gone acronym crazy! LOL We are so excited that the last three pups from our co-bred Faridaat Eo litter have been assigned their critique registration numbers via SPDBS! Now onto AKC registrations and the whole Generation lll desert descent litter will be officially able to compete in AKC and CKC sanctioned events!
04/17/10 THE FARIDAAT F LITTER IS OFFICIAL!!
Our beautiful Burydown Violane Gem is expecting puppies on our about May 12. Layla was bred to the stunning Belgian import EnAyat Nika Hadi el Basher and we expect puppies in shades of sable, black tricolour and possibly cream.
These pups should be serious contenders in the ring and the field. We are taking reservations for pups now; serious inquiries are welcome! :learn more >>
04/13/10 HEY THERE LIL MAMMA?!
Well, it's not official, but for all intents and purposes it appears that our beautiful Layla has begun growing a little baby belly! We are crossing fingers for puppies around May 12, but won't know how many she is carrying until a week before her due date.
We are now taking reservations for this litter! Please email sbwork@telus.net. Serious inquiries only please.
Photo: Top image taken the date of breeding March 10; bottom image taken April 13. You can see her midsection has thickened and is beginning to drop!
03/23/10 CRITIQUES ARE DONE!
It's been a busy spring here at Faridaat. On March 20 we trekked across the border to complete SPDBS critiques on the Faridaat Eo Litter! Ginger, Freckles and I met up with Rita and Koga had a wonderful time meeting many other Saluki owners/breeders in beautiful Bay View State Park. A big THANK YOU goes out to Marilyn LaBrache Brown for helping organize and judge the critiques and to Barbara O'Neil and Laura Young for judging. Now we send off the forms and photos and await the final decision by the SPDBS committee. Judging by this beautiful photo of Koga (by M. Brown) I don't think you could mistake these pups for anything but Salukis!
03/14/10 HAVE TRUFFLE, WILL TRAVEL!
Dagmar sent us some new photos of our gorgeous little Truffle, who will be making her trip across the pond around April 21st. We are simultaneously ecstatic and nervous about her trip; we just can't wait until she arrives safely in our arms. In the meantime, Dagmar is having fun taking Truffle and her sister out for car rides, walks and lots of socialization. April 21st can't come quick enough for us though!
03/10/10 WEDDED BLISS or MEXICAN STANDOFF?
We got home today after visiting EnAyat Nika Hadi el Basher. Things didn't go quite according to plan, but we did manage one breeding so we are crossing fingers in the hope that we caught Layla at the right time. We should know in about 4 weeks whether she is in whelp or not. Here's hoping! :learn more >>

01/09/10 Spring Litter Plans are in the works!!
We have decided upon a mate for Burydown Violane Gem (Layla). Once Layla passes her pre-breeding exam and comes into season, she will be bred to Belgian import Enayat Nika Hadi el Basher! We expect pups from this match to burn up the coursing fields! :learn more >>
01/5/10 Xena is Registered with SPDBS!
Yes, it's true! Faridaat Eo Xena has now been assigned her SPDBS CRN with her AKC registration to follow!
12/25/09 Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
10/17/09 AKC Registrations!
I know it seems like a mundane topic, but getting Gen 3 desert bred pups to the point of AKC registration is an exciting prospect for their breeder and owners alike! To date, two of our Superhero Litter are now officially AKC registered and a third should be shortly! We are hopeful that the whole litter will be registered within the year, with three of those also CKC registered!
10/01/09 SPDBS CRNS COME TRICKLING IN!
The first of our Gen 3 pups has now been assigned a critique registration numbers (CRNs) through SPDBS! Faridaat Eo Colossus aka Loki is the first of the Faridaat Eo litter to receive his SPDBS number and we are all very excited since his AKC registration will follow shortly! This means that Loki will be able to participate in all AKC sanctioned events in the near future. His owners Daniel Burton and Wendy Ertter hope to course Loki and we are looking forward to seeing how he does! There are still 3 pups needing their critiques and we are hopeful this will occur in Spring 2010.
UPDATE: We also received notification that Faridaat Eo Johnny Canuck and Faridaat Eo Santana Beatrix have also been assigned their CRNs! Congratulations to their owners!
09/22/09 A CHANGE OF HEART?
This has been a tough year here at RavenWood Acres/Faridaat - not for the dogs, but for the humans. In the face of layoffs, reduced work hours, family priorities and other goings on, we had decided to put our breeding program on hold for a while. That decision may be short lived as we contemplate a last litter for our Burydown Violane Gem. Given Layla's advancing age and the fact that there are few direct descended Burydowns now available this has taken on a new importance. If we can find just the right fellow for our girl and she passes all her health exams, we may be embarking on a spring 2010 litter! Production of this litter is quite dependent on potential homes, so if you are interested in a pup and would like to see this litter come to fruition, I encourage you to let me know immediately. Serious inquiries only.
07/28/09 SPDBS CRITIQUES - ONE STEP CLOSER!
Four of the Faridaat Eo 'Superhero' litter received their SPDBS critiques on Tuesday, July 28. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend because of my MIA passport so the three pups living in Canada will attend an alternate critique sometime between now and Spring 2010. The judges assessed each pup and gave them ratings from good to excellent. Pictures are currently being processed to include with the forms to be sent to SPDBS to apply for their critique registration numbers (CRNs). Judges were DJ McLain, Carol Fisher, and Marianne Klinkowski. We greatly appreciate their taking time from their busy schedules after Lompoc to assist us in registering these Gen 3 pups!
07/18/09 CONGRATULATIONS!

A hearty congratulations goes out to Catherine Williams and Carole Adley for Faridaat Danae's Winners Bitch award at the Saluki Club of Canada's Pacific Specialty Show by breeder/judge Lesley Brabyn (Timaru). Danae is a sister to our beautiful Tula and lives on Vancouver Island with Catherine. Photo by Elaine Russell-Rushton
07/13/09 ADULT FEMALE AVAILABLE
After much debate, we've come to the agonizing decision to rehome one of our Salukis. We currently have one spayed adult female available to the right home under a co-ownership agreement. The ideal home should be a single dog home (or possibly with 1 companion dog/cat) in Western Canada. For more details please contact sbwork@telus.net.
06/13/09 THE LOSS OF A LEGEND - HOPE WATERS
The Saluki Community has lost a great Legend - Hope Waters, Burydown Salukis. Hope died peacefully Thursday evening at the age of 97 years old. Hope and her Burydown Salukis are well known around the world and have played a role in the development of many lines around today. Her enormous and dedicated contribution to the Saluki breed has left an indelible mark. We are all grateful for her dedication and it is now up to us to carry her legacy forward!
Faridaat Salukis is greatly honoured that Hope Waters and friend/co-breeder Carole Adley allowed Burydown Violane Gem to grace our doorstep. Even more special is that Layla is from one of the last of the Burydown litters. Layla has already given us a beautiful daughter (and possibly another litter in the near future) and the Burydown influence will live on in her offspring for years to come.
My Deepest Condolences to Hope's family, her dear friend Carole Adley and her other close friends. You will be missed.
05/31/09 BLONDIE & ARCHIE LEAVE FOR THEIR NEW HOMES
It's always sad to see them go, but these pups will be so happy to be in their new homes where they get more individual attention. Blondie (now called Beatrix) flew out to Vancouver where her new owner Warren Cook will pick her up and drive the remaining trip back to Eagle Point Oregon. Archie (now called Loki) flew out to Vancouver, spent the evening in the kennel and then flew out the next morning for Portland where his new owner Wendy Ertter picked him up to finish their trip to Boise Idaho. It was a long couple of days for both of them, but they are now happily settling into their new homes.
05/03/09 TULA GETS GROUP 3!
After a very long absence from the show ring, we put our spring handling classes to the test this weekend and came home with a Group 3 under John Ross at the Lakes District Kennel Club shows in Burns Lake, BC! There was no breed competition so we had to hope for a group placement in order to get any points. We were dumped in the other three shows, but finally someone noticed us in the 4th show! We were up against some stiff competition (Basenji, GCh. Ahmahr Nahr Jake Jamul To Mibre who took BIS under Bud Haverstock in the previous show that day), but I think had Tula been less ribby and more fit she might have placed a bit higher. None-the-less, we were elated at our success! Grand thanks to judge John Ross for recognizing our girl!
04/30/09 CHICHI LEAVES HOME!
ChiChi (now called Xena) left for her new home today. She flies into Portland on May 1 where her new owner will pick her up then drive 7hrs home to Idaho! We hope all goes well and can't wait to hear that she's arrived okay!
04/24/09 JC LEAVES FOR CALIFORNIA!
JC (now called Rafiq) left on an Air Canada flight to California today. Once he arrives in Vancouver he has to kennel overnight, then he heads out again the next morning for Los Angeles! We hope his new owners will like him and that he travels well. He's a bit of a slobberpuss in the car!
04/01/09 MAJIID FINDS A RETIREMENT HOME!
Majiid has found the most wonderful home! After a long drive to Vancouver and a day waiting in the park Majiid met his new owner Barbra and it was love at first sight! We are so greatful to Barbra for stepping forward to provide a wonderful home for Majiid, who despite losing his wonderful owner Della, has adapted well to everything I've thrown at him since last July. Majiid is such a happy fellow and loves everyone, which I'm sure is why he is able to adjust so readily. I hope that he settles in well with his new owner and his big Irish Wolfhound pup kennelmate!
03/29/09 JUGHEAD MAKES HIS WAY TO ALBERTA!
Jughead (now called Koga) left for his new home today. He's heading to the Jasper area where his new family lives. His new kids are very excited for his arrival and we are very excited about bringing a new family into the wonderful world of Salukis! His new owners are hoping to try tracking and rescue work with Koga.
01/30/09 EDEN SUFFERS INFECTION
I noticed Eden seemed fatigued, feverish and lacking in appetite over the weekend - not good signs for a new mom of seven. Of course the worst scenarios flashed through my mind; infection, retained pup, milk fever and the list goes on. Thankfully it was just a minor infection. We treated her with some antibiotics and she was back to herself in a matter of days.
01/23/09 WE'VE GOT PUPPIES!
Eden whelped 7 gorgeous pups on Friday, Jan. 23/09! This litter is the culmination of many years of planning and we are absolutely elated! Eden (Melik Gulshen) was bred to Otis (Santana Blackbird) to produce the first part desert bred litter at Faridaat. Learn more about our Faridaat E Litter. Most are already spoken for, but inquiries are welcomed!
01/20/09 How Many Do You See?
We took Eden in for her X-ray today, in the hopes of determining how many pups are in that gigantic belly of hers. I'm expecting her to whelp on roughly Jan 24.
The resultant images were not very clear, but we were able to count 7, possibly 8 pups. How many do you see?
With a clean bill of health and an approximate puppy count we are now set for our long drive to Oregon for whelping. Wish us luck!
12/24/08 Eden's Expanding Belly
Eden has given us a number of clues leading us to believe she is, in fact, pregnant. Her belly has already begun to expand and we expect pups around January 24/09! Inquiries welcome!
11/30/08 A Litter on the Way?
Eden was bred to Otis several times between Nov. 22-26. We are very excited and hopeful that Eden caught and will present us with some puppies in January! That would be a great way to start the New Year.
8/11/08 Another Cruel Blow
We rushed Kenya in to the vet this morning where she underwent an emergency spay due to pyometra. Thankfully she is okay and recovering, but my dreams of her puppies will never come to fruition. Very disappointing and stressful day. We regret any inconvenience caused to those who were short listed for a puppy and would be happy to put you on the list for Eden's proposed litter or refer you to another breeder.
8/02/08 When One Door Closes Another Opens
Though we must say goodbye to those who have left us, we must still look to the future. After a 4 year search for just the right stud, Iroki Faridaat Kinyago aka Kenya was bred to Santana Blackbird this morning in the hopes that our Cirque du Soleil Litter will finally make it's appearance. For more information on this litter, please visit our puppies page!
8/01/08 Sleep Soundly My Angel
It's been a year of sad goodbyes. On Friday, August 2 we said our fondest fairwells to our foundation bitch Iroki Pelageya aka Jenny. She was just weeks from her 16th birthday. Jenny had personality to spare and her absence will be painfully felt.
7/19/08 Welcome Home
Ch. Iroki Faridaat Touchstone came home to Faridaat on Saturday, July 19. Sadly, his owner has become very ill and can no longer care for him. Majiid is from our 2000 litter and will spend some time here with us before he heads to his new home.
5/24/08 Goodbye Sweet Prince
We said goodbye to our foundation stud Iroki Oberon aka Darby today. You will always be missed.
5/24/08 Black is Back @ Faridaat!
Faridaat would like to welcome SANTANA BLACKBIRD to the pack. Otis is part desert descent, bred by Warren & Vicky Cook (Santana) and comes from a line of superlative open field coursers. We absolutely love his format and his temperament and are very excited at having him here. We hope to stand Otis to 2 of our girls in the near future! Stay tuned!
4/20/08 Faridaat makes the 2007 Top 10 Lure Coursers list!
Faridaat Danae owned by Carole Adley & Catherine Williams sits at #6, and Faridaat Soleil du Minuit owned by Marlene Nixey & Catherine Hays holds the #8. Congratulations to the owners of these delightful huonds!! Can you tell we are proud too?!
